Policy and Goals:
Maximize environmental protection by reclaiming over 80% of the waste stream into beneficial products such as compost, segregated recyclables and incinerator fuel.
Dispose of only inert waste materials in landfills and minimize the volume.
Awards:
Special Haines Earth Day Award, 2004 for environmental protection in relation to the industrial scale composting operations begun at HSI's Haines waste processing site. Designed to render the maximum possible volume of waste into re-usable inert by-products
Partnerships:
City of Skagway. Reduce cruise ship waste to resuable compost, reduce incenerated waste by 80% and provide highly combustible incinerator fuel to replace expensive diesel fuel.
Haines Borough. Municipal waste pickup by contract. Composting of sewage sludge into usable topsoil.
Alaska Marine Lines to send recyclables to market.
Working closely with DEC and the Denali Commission to continually improve equipment and practices.
